200Introduction#
This section of the manual will go over all items that affect the department's chain of command. This section will outline all responsibilities and overall supervision within LSPD.
201Who is my COC?#
While LSPD encourages its Chain of Command ("CoC") members to have an open-door policy for all Officers, following the CoC as outlined below is highly recommended.
LSPD CoC starts with Corporals. They have the knowledge and experience to guide Officers and answer any questions or concerns they may have in or out of patrol.
202Chain of Command Duties#
The following section is an outline of the duties that each rank within the LSPD CoC will be responsible and held accountable for. This is not a comprehensive list of duties, but an overview of tasks expected to be completed by any and all members who hold that rank. Additional tasks may be assigned by LSPD Command as needed and deemed appropriate.
202-01Chief of Police#
The Chief of Police is responsible for overseeing the entire department and ensuring the department has all assets necessary to protect the citizens of the state. Large-scale decisions involving the department must be run through the Chief of Police for approval.
202-02Deputy Chief#
The Deputy Chief is responsible for overseeing patrol and subdivisions. The Deputy Chief is second in command of the department.
202-03 - Commander
The Commander is responsible for assisting with departmental administration, staffing, recruitment, personnel management, policies, and training, ensuring the Department remains adequately staffed and that personnel receive the appropriate training and development necessary to perform their duties effectively.
202-04Captain#
Captains are responsible for overseeing major divisions and units within the department. They are to oversee Lieutenants and Sergeants.
202-05Lieutenant#
The Lieutenants are responsible for managing their assigned division. Lieutenants will meet with both Sergeants bi-monthly to discuss promotions within their divisions. Lieutenants will approve all promotions up to Officer 2. They may also manage subdivisions.
Lieutenants may promote Officers up to the rank of Officer II
202-06.aSergeants#
Sergeants are responsible for overseeing their assigned section. They assist in overseeing and training new Corporals. Sergeants will work to put forward promotion recommendations to Command.
202-06.bCorporal#
Corporals are the first line in the Chain of Command, and are considered full supervisors. They are responsible for overseeing patrol operations and acting as a field supervisor for Officers. Corporals will work to train new Officers and to complete Field Training Ride-Alongs.
203Supervisor Guidelines#
To ensure the proper performance of supervisor permissions the following policy has been established.
203-01Supervisor Duties#
All LSPD supervisors are required to ensure all Officers are following the set guidelines that apply to them. When a violation is witnessed, all LSPD supervisors must enforce the violation using their own discretion.
